Socialization of the Fluffies

By: Rox

Socialization is a HUGE part of helping puppies understand the world around them. The critical period for socialization begins about 3 weeks after birth, when a puppy starts to hear sounds, open his eyes and really awaken to the world around him. It’s during this time that the puppy can begin to interact with humans and other animals.

Because we want to be especially careful not to expose the puppy to parvo, it is important to keep him away from potential sources of the contagious disease. He will retain some of his mama’s antibodies for up to 6 weeks, then begin a series of vaccinations. Until those vaccinations are complete, he should stay away from unvaccinated animals and places where humans can possibly spread the germs from unvaccinated animals. Though Yorkies and Maltese are at a decreased risk for parvo than some larger breeds, we still do most of their socialization at home until they have completed their vaccinations. (Most of their field trips are limited to the vet’s office, which they actually love!)

From there on it’s all about gaining new, fun, safe experiences. Introducing them to new places, a variety of people, other animals, sounds, smells, and sights helps them to become comfortable and relaxed in all kinds of situations. Studies have shown that environmental factors are likely to affect behavior. Early experiences can affect behavior and mental health, so the earlier they start – the better!

At Fluff Town, we continue to offer as much socialization to our parent dogs as possible, because the effects and behaviors of the parent dogs can influence future generations through epigenetics.

Who says social animals have to be butterflies? We say, bring on the social furballs!
