Fluff Town Puppies is committed to the health and safety of our dogs. We do not and will not produce any puppies considered to be “teacup” size. Here’s why:
“Teacup” dogs are dogs that are bred to be as small in size as genetically possible. They are produced from breeds that are already small, like Chihuahuas, Maltese, Yorkies, etc. The intentional marketing and production of “teacup” dogs is an unethical practice that generates unnaturally small animals with extremely increased health risks for the animal. The standard size for Yorkies and Maltese is 4-7 lbs. At 7 lbs., these dogs are already tiny. Anything smaller than 4 lbs. is more likely to be unhealthy. (*Side note: we keep our mama dogs just a little chunkier for the purpose of breeding).
To produce these “teacup” versions, unethical breeders will mate two small dogs, typically 4 lbs. each, in order to achieve offspring which are 4 lbs. or smaller. They start with two dogs that are either runts or have been malnourished in order to keep them small. The tiny little offspring are then more prone to hereditary and non-hereditary disease, arthritis, seizures, hypoglycemia, blindness, heart defects, breathing problems, liver disease, dental problems, hydrocephalus (water on the brain), open fontanelles (soft spots in the skull) and more.
Minor falls can break their bones. One missed meal can lead to low blood sugar and seizures. Minor illnesses can turn into major struggles as these fragile dogs’ immune system tries to fight back. And, sadly, the life expectancy for these little dogs is significantly lower than that of a healthy sized dog. Most ethical organizations do not even recognize the term “teacup” as a classification of dogs. Our stance is that we would never want to bring an animal into this world only to have it endure a lifetime of suffering just so a human can carry it around in their pocket.
